National Wildlife Federation works to defend, strengthen, fund, and implement legislation that protects wildlife and benefits endangered species. We are driven by the firm belief that saving America's wildlife strengthens the fabric of our democracy and increases prosperity for future generations.
Legislative Victories Through the Years
Under the leadership of our first president, J.N. “Ding” Darling, the Federation’s priority was passing the 1937 Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, a cornerstone of the revered North American model of wildlife conservation. This victory launched the recovery of dozens of bird and mammal species and propelled our continued work with countless partners to conserve and protect our nation’s precious natural resources.

A Focus on Conservation Funding
We are committed to securing fair funding through federal budget appropriations, clean energy and climate legislation, energy leases, and other sources to maintain healthy wildlife populations, recover endangered species, and restore impaired ecosystems.

Advocating for Strong Climate Policy
National Wildlife Federation advocates across the country for legislation that will stop carbon pollution and protect America's communities and wildlife from the climate crisis. Our top priority is the passage of federal legislation that:
- Limits carbon dioxide and other pollutants that are the drivers of climate change
- Funds protection of our nation's wildlife and natural resources that are impacted by the climate crisis
- Ensures forests and farmland management strategies that take climate change into account
- Provides green jobs education and training funding
- Confirms federal commitment to protecting the world's tropical forests
- Incorporates a strong climate justice ethos
Sporting Issues
For decades, we have been the driving force behind many of our nation’s most critical pieces of conservation legislation that support the ability to hunt and fish. Our Outdoors team is currently focused on several priority issues affecting hunters and anglers, including Recovering America's Wildlife Act, the Farm Bill, sage-grouse conservation, chronic wasting disease, and more.
