International Partnerships
Foundation for Environmental Education
As stated on our Who We Are page, we are a member organization of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in the United States, and our proud to offer the Eco-Schools program to schools across the country.
Eco-Schools is a globally recognized program within the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Using a Seven Step project-based learning framework and a whole-school approach, students engage in hands-on, active learning to drive positive environmental change in their school and local community.
As an accreditation system, the Eco-Schools program recognizes the progressive changes made by educational institutions through the Seven Steps. The prestigious Green Flag is awarded when significant environmental and educational improvements have been achieved. The Green Flag is renewed periodically to ensure continuous positive development.
To date, Eco-Schools is implemented in over 73 countries worldwide.
FEE & ESD for 2030
FEE is a supporting member of the UNESCO-led Greening Education Partnership and is Focal Point for Pillar 1 on Greening Schools. The partnership will “deliver strong, coordinated and comprehensive action that will prepare every learner to acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to tackle climate change and to promote sustainable development.”
The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which runs from 2021 to 2030, calls for the protection and revival of ecosystems worldwide. Under the UN Decade Action Plan, The Education Challenge 6.1 aims to embed ecosystem restoration education into education systems worldwide by 2030 as a critical element of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Led by FEE, the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), and UNESCO, the Challenge requires the collective effort of governments, educators, students, and communities worldwide.
As a member of FEE, EcoSchools U.S. is also an official partner of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and a key partner in the Global Action Program (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development.
Global Environmental Education Programs
The National Wildlife Federation acts as an advisor to the Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP), a global initiative comprised of environmental education policy makers, providers, and practitioners who represent government and/or non governmental sectors in countries throughout the world. We work together, under the leadership of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Taiwan Environmental Protection Agency, and the North American Association for Environmental Education, to create a vibrant learning network to build capacity in member countries to strengthen and institutionalize environmental education, focusing on policy, professional development, education, and best practices.
The GLOBE Program
The National Wildlife Federation's Eco-Schools USA program partners with The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program to integrate school sustainability and Earth systems observations, data collection, and action to protect and conserve wildlife and wild places. The GLOBE Program is an interagency project sponsored by NASA and the National Science Foundation, with support from NOAA and the Department of State, and implemented by a cooperative agreement with University Corporation of Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
