Great Northwoods

Why are we working for Great Northwoods?

Our Great Northwoods isn't just a place on the map; it's one of North America’s cherished gems. Its millions of acres of lush forests and shimmering waters provide essential habitats for a diverse array of wildlife. But it's not just about nature; it's about connection.

Situated close to major population centers in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, the Northwoods offer unparalleled opportunities to unwind, adventure, and reconnect with the natural world.

Yet, there are mounting threats to this keystone American ecosystem.

What we’re facing

Resource extraction, the climate crisis, the rise of deadly wildlife diseases, and dwindling funding for science-based conservation endanger this treasured woodland. The time to act is now - that’s why we created the Great NorthWoods Initiative.

Our Commitment: The Great Northwoods Initiative

To safeguard the Great Northwoods for generations to come, National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is proud to introduce the Great Northwoods Initiative. In collaboration with local partners and stakeholders, we are dedicated to:

Join us in the effort to protect our Great Northwoods and ensure its enduring splendor. Together, we can protect the Great Northwoods and everyone who calls it home.
