Standing seven million people strong, Garden for Wildlife™ is America's largest, longest-running movement dedicated to helping local wildlife and wild spaces.
Since 1973, Garden for Wildlife has been educating and empowering people to turn their own small pieces of Earth into thriving habitat for birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife. In doing so, people across North America are making a difference in their cities, towns, and neighborhoods—all while deepening their connections to the natural world.
Founded on the belief that everyone can enjoy and protect wildlife where they live, work, learn, play, and worship, the National Wildlife Federation’s Garden for Wildlife programs provide simple steps and resources to create beautiful spaces that make a big impact for local and migratory species, from small window boxes to vast habitat corridors.
Celebrating 50 years in 2023, GFW has grown to influence the creation of an estimated 4 million wildlife friendly acres of backyards, public gardens, school districts, corporate campuses, colleges and universities, places of worship and community spaces across North America and at embassies across the world.
The number of habitat gardens spans those in our Certified Wildlife Habitat® network, Schoolyard Habitats, Butterfly Heroes™, The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, Mayors Monarch Pledge, Community Wildlife Habitats, native plant installations led by NWF regions and affiliates, homebuilder Taylor Morrison communities and those of new native plant customers at https://gardenforwildlife.com/pages/impact.
Garden for Wildlife offers options for anyone, anywhere, to support local wildlife and restore and reconnect America’s natural spaces. This includes Garden for Wildlife's signature Certified Wildlife Habitat® program, species-specific campaigns and partner initiatives, and National Wildlife Federation affiliate and regional campaigns focused on birds and other wildlife. Get started by creating your garden today.
For over 50 years the National Wildlife Federation has inspired Americans to garden for wildlife with its Garden for Wildlife program. In 2021, the National Wildlife Federation proudly introduced the Garden for Wildlife, Inc., a new enterprise distinct from NWF but with a shared commitment to mission. The vision behind that enterprise was clear: to make native plants accessible to more people, furthering our conservation mission while also generating additional revenues to support our cause. You can visit Garden For Wildlife Inc. and see its native plant offerings here.
